Waste plastics have a new way out! The United States, Britain, India, the Netherlands and other countries have built plastic roads

A new highway built in Oroville, California, looks like an ordinary highway, but it's the first one in the United States to use recycled plastic. The three lane highway uses about 150000 plastic bottles per mile (equivalent to 1.6 kilometers).

According to reports, the use of waste plastic road surface has become more solid. "Traditional asphalt roads rely on stone particles to enhance road strength," said Sean weaver, President of technisol, a start-up that works on the road. "Our roads rely on a matrix of plastic adhesives for strength, and stone particles are just fillers." The service life of the new road is two to three times longer than that of standard asphalt road.

The company's process is to chemically recycle pet, a material commonly used in plastic bottles and other disposable packaging, back to its original polymer chain form. Then, it is used as an engineering adhesive to bond and strengthen the recycled asphalt, so as to create a new waste plastic highway.

To repair the road, workers use bulldozers to grind the top layer of the road and then lay recycled plastic on the road. In the past, when roads were built in California, asphalt was usually used. Because the quality of roads repaired by this method was not good enough, new materials should be added. In this way, to repair a mile long single lane, it is possible to introduce 42 trucks of new material and haul 42 trucks of waste.

The advantage of using waste plastic pavement is that it can avoid the construction trucks entering and leaving the construction site, thus reducing the emissions in the logistics process and accelerating the construction speed. According to reports, the project can also be carried out in the evening. The traditional paving process needs heat, but the waste plastic paving process needs low temperature to save more energy.

The company is also working with Los Angeles to try out plastic highways, and with Caltrans, the state transportation department, which will soon promote plastic highways in other parts of California. The waste plastic paving project for the 1000 foot highway section in Oroville has been completed and, according to Sean weaver, a second and third project has been under study.

According to macreburi, asphalt mixed plastics will make roads more durable and reduce road cracks and potholes. Plastics also replace some asphalt components in asphalt, reducing the use of fossil fuels and reducing emissions.

Cumbria County received a grant of 1.6 million pounds for the road new technology testing project, which is part of an innovation program called adept smart places live labs. The reconstruction of the Lowther street road will cost about 150000.

Toby McCartney, macrebor's chief executive, said the promotion of waste plastic roads across the country would really reduce the carbon footprint of road construction.

India: building 100000 km of roads with waste plastics

According to Hindustan, the 270 kilometer Jammu Kashmir national highway is made of waste plastic. About 1.6 tons of plastic waste was used in the two kilometer section of the Delhi Meerut highway.

According to the media, the Indian government insists on using waste plastics in road construction to make rational use of waste plastic resources that would not have been recycled. So far, 100000 kilometers of roads have been built with waste plastic. Waste plastics will also be used to build roads connecting dhaula Kuan and Delhi airport.

A mixture of 9 tons of asphalt and 1 ton of plastic waste is required for the construction of each kilometer of road, which means that one ton of asphalt can be saved per kilometer of road, and the cost is about 30000 rupees (2785 yuan). The plastic content of plastic highway ranges from 6% to 8%, while asphalt content accounts for 92% to 94%.

Nitin gadkari, Minister of the Indian Federation, announced the use of plastic waste in road construction as early as 2016. Since then, plastic waste has been used in the construction of 100000 km of roads in 11 states. It is said that this figure will double in the current financial year. India's gurgram Municipal Authority (MCG) used plastic waste in road construction for the first time in 2018. Now, the use of plastic waste is more mandatory in road construction, while in Assam, the use of plastic waste has started this year.

India produces at least 25940 tons of waste plastic a day, the weight of about 4300 elephants. About 60% of that is recycled, according to the alliance's environment department. The rest is dumped in landfills or drains, or into the sea in the form of microplastics, or burned to cause air pollution. In the absence of a proper waste management system, the recycled plastics are usually dirty plastics, which makes the recycling process water consuming and expensive.

Dutch plastic highway module will enter industrial mass production

According to plastic road, a company that specializes in making plastic road modules, the world's first plastic road bicycle road in the Netherlands has made more than one million records for the first time.

Plastic road is a project enterprise of KWS, a Dutch road construction and asphalt production enterprise. KWS, based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is a subsidiary of Royal Volker Wessels. Plastic road is jointly established by volkerwessels, plastic piping system, and total, a global integrated energy producer and supplier. The plastic road plastic road module is made of recycled plastic waste.

Plastic road first transports plastic waste to the plant, where it is crushed, and then is pressed into prefabricated slabs of the same specification by professional technology. When building a highway, we just need to lay a good subgrade, and we can join the plastic formwork to form a road like Lego building blocks.

It is said that after a year and a half of testing and developing it into a design suitable for industrial production, the technology is ready to be launched on the market, and plastic road will start industrial production in the first quarter of 2021.

Plastic road has launched a pilot project in two 30m bike lanes in the Netherlands, and the results show that waste plastic can be used to build prefabricated highway modules. Each pilot project uses about 1000 kg of recycled plastic, equivalent to 218000 plastic cups. Plastic road's pilot project can achieve 50% to 70% reduction in emissions compared to traditional bicycle lanes made of asphalt or concrete slabs, the company said.

According to reports, in the actual project, plastic road products will be more robust and durable than the test products, and the strength is 2.5 times of the test version. This makes plastic road suitable for applications such as parking lots, and the company says it is preparing its first pilot project for this particular application. The company also said it was a step toward using plastic road for cars and other road traffic.

Each plastic road template is hollow design, which can be laid with cables, pipes and sensors to facilitate power transmission. In terms of drainage, the highway module with strong water storage and drainage performance is designed. The rainwater will be transferred to the hollow layer through the space between the plastic materials, and then discharged through the hollow layer.

The company said it would first promote plastic road modules in the Netherlands and surrounding countries before expanding to other markets around the world.
