Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organization in the Netherlands that works to remove marine plastic waste.

The organization's founder, Boyan Slat, came up with an idea in a 2012 TEDx presentation to have equipment automatically recycle marine debris. For the past seven years, Boyan has been seeking funding to design and deploy this particular piece of equipment. Today, this equipment has been put into use and successfully brought marine plastic garbage back to land.

This 610-meter-long floating pipe sweeps across the water to collect plastic waste. It brought back 60 bags of one cubic meter of plastic waste, from fishing nets and plastic bags to one millimeter-sized plastic product.

Boyan believes that most people today don't see the value of cleaning up.

This is not an individual issue, and we believe it is an issue for everyone. We hope that by making beautiful and sustainable products, everyone will have the opportunity to participate in environmental protection solutions, so that they can actually participate in the cleaning work ... Our idea is to turn these garbage into consumer products, and they will not return To the ocean, and we will invest 100% of the proceeds into future cleaning.

Boyan believes products made from marine plastic waste as having a particular appeal. Just like the difference between stones on the moon and ordinary stones, the products made from marine debris are different from ordinary products. I hope we can succeed in the end, making marine litter history to be a thing of the past. There will be some cool products reminding us that waste is still there, it just becomes a commodity.

He even thought about the future needs, such as you need to prove that the marine garbage promoted by the goods really comes from the ocean.

To this end, they are now working with a third-party certification expert, DNV GL, to verify the authenticity of marine plastic waste. Boyan hopes that more companies and foundations will join the team that verifies the authenticity of plastic waste, because now publicity claims that products made from marine plastic waste 'are not truly transparent.

In fact, there are indeed many large companies that are beginning to try to make products by waste.

In 2017, Adidas partnered with Parley For The Oceans to create Adidas Parley, a sneaker made from plastic trash in the ocean. 75% of these shoes are made from marine waste, but it still meets the same performance and comfort standards as other Adidas shoes.

In 2019, Adidas estimates that 11 million pairs of shoes will be made from recycled marine plastic.

Procter & Gamble has also partnered with TerraCycle to launch Ocean Plastic Packaging, a 'sea fairytale plastic' bottle made entirely of ocean plastic and other PCR.

Another consumer giant, Unilever's REN Skincare brand, is also interested in the new story of marine litter. Their new '100% recycled bottles' contain 20% of marine plastic litter.

Everything is not just marine litter.

Allbirds, a star company in the field of shoemaking, uses cashmere for shoes, recycled bottles for shoelaces, and packaging is 90% recycled cardboard.

The startup Ecovative uses mushroom roots instead of polystyrene packaging materials. Agricultural fertilizer and mushroom root packaging materials are more environmentally friendly, and are superior to previous traditional materials in terms of degradation and recycling.

What's even more surprising is to ‘build a car’ with coffee beans.

The cooperation between McDonald's and Ford has used millions of kilograms of coffee bean shell 'junk' every year.

In a low oxygen environment, the coffee bean shell is heated to a high temperature and then mixed with plastic and other additives to produce a new type of composite material. This coffee bean shell composite meets automotive-grade standards for headlight shells, under-the-hood parts, and other interior parts, and reduces energy consumption by up to 25%

Using trash to make environmentally friendly products, in addition to enhancing the brand's reputation, it can also get real gold and silver returns on a commercial level.

Nielsen found in a 2015 report that 45% of respondents worldwide are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products, while 41% are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly packaging.

Although consumers rarely choose a certain product because of environmental protection, when the quality of the products is similar, consumers are also willing to pay more for environmental protection.
