AEPW to launch zero plastic waste city projects in India and Vietnam

Today, the world produces 100 million tons of plastic waste every year. The earth has fallen into a huge crisis of plastic pollution. Plastic waste not only pollutes the environment, but also turns into microplastic particles and enters the human body, endangering human health. How to reduce the generation of plastic waste and solve the plastic pollution crisis is a problem that environmental protection agencies around the world want to solve urgently.

The Global Alliance for Ending Plastic Waste Alliance (AEPW), in cooperation with the German Grameen Creative Lab, will support the development of a plastic-free waste city to reduce the flow of plastic waste into the ecological environment.

The Zero Plastic Waste City project was developed by the Grameen Creative Lab, an institution created and led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.

The project will develop and implement a social enterprise model to solve one or more social issues in a financially self-sufficient way to improve municipal waste management systems. Starting in 2020, projects will be launched in two different cities, India and Vietnam.

"The goal of the End of Plastic Waste Alliance and the Grameen Innovation Lab is to help end plastic waste in the environment and create new opportunities for individuals and communities in the process," said Jacob Jacobs, President and CEO of the End of Plastic Waste Alliance. · Jacob Duer said. "Our joint efforts in India and Vietnam will result in meaningful, sustainable improvements to our environmental protection and quality of life for all people living, working and playing in a zero plastic waste city."

"We need to establish a circular economy to achieve zero pollution from plastic waste. Entrepreneurship and the social enterprise model will greatly help achieve this goal. Grameen Creative Labs is creating new opportunities for scavengers, and we are very happy The End Plastics Coalition is a partner in this initiative, "Mohamed Yunus said.

Harnessing the potential of the informal sector is important to increase waste collection and provide economic opportunities. The goal of social enterprises is to empower different actors in the formal and informal waste value chain to transform collected waste into renewable materials, thereby supporting greater circularity and economic empowerment.

Grameen Creative Labs is looking for local partners to implement projects and conduct pilot assessments in India and Vietnam. The two cities implementing the project will be announced in early 2020, and the Grameen Creative Lab will also explore ways to expand these social enterprises to other cities in 2021.
