Plastic bottle becomes a fashional speaker! It turns out that Google, Dell, apple and Samsung are all doing this

Earlier, at the "made by Google" product announcement in New York, Google announced that it would invest 150 million US dollars in recycling products to support global sustainable development.

This is another sustainable behave after Google announced in August that all Google products will contain recycled materials by 2022

One recycled plastic bottle creates two of Google's latest speakers

"Made by Google" products include mobile phones, laptops, tablets, game devices and connected home products including nest.

According to Ivy Ross, Google's chief designer, every nest product sold in 2019 contains recycled plastic.

Among them, the nest mini speakers are made of 100% recycled plastic bottles. According to the company, just one recycled plastic bottle is enough to make two Google home mini speakers without any difference on style or color.

Ivy Ross, Google's chief designer, said: "the core of design is to solve the problems that human and the world are facing. Sustainability is one of the most fundamental challenges of our generation. "

Anna Meegan, Google's head of sustainable development, said of Google's products made entirely of recycled plastics: "in terms of current costs, this is not the best way for us to take. At present, it is the most cost-effective way to make these products with native plastics, but we adhere to the sustainable development path."

However, Google firmly believes that green products are not a fad, and consumers will move towards them. In this way, large-scale use of recycled plastic manufacturing equipment will be more cost-effective for technology giants.

The speaker net cover is made of waste plastic bottle, and the main body of the product is made of old CD and automobile headlight. It should be noted that this product, which is made of different recycled plastics, will not lead to a reduction in durability and the quality is as reliable as any other equipment previously manufactured.

Not only Google, but also several other global technology giants are moving towards sustainable development.

Dell uses recycled plastics from five aspects such as electronic waste plastics

Since 2014, Dell has used 100 million pounds of recycled materials in its products, most of which are recycled plastics. At present, Dell mainly uses recycled plastics from the following six aspects.

Electronic waste plastics: Since 2015, Dell has used 35 million pounds of electronic plastics (13.7 million pounds in 2018) to make components for 125 different desktop and display products. According to Dell, the average content of closed-loop electronic plastics in products is 30-35%.

Post consumer packaging: Dell last year used 7.7 million pounds of post consumer recycled plastic from packaging such as water bottles and CD boxes collected. Since 2014, the company has used 56.9 million pounds of post consumer recycled materials in hundreds of desktop and display models.

Marine waste: in 2018, Dell used more than 18000 pounds of HDPE. Dell shipped the bottles from Haiti to the Chinese factory, then molded them into pallets to install Dell equipment.

The black pallet is composed of 25% marine waste plastic HDPE and 75% post consumer HDPE, which are purchased through collection plan. In 2018, these marine plastics were used in 441000 packaging pallets.

Carbon fiber recycled materials: in 2018, Dell used 636000 pounds of aerospace recycled carbon fiber. Dell uses more than two million pounds of carbon fiber to make the laptop base and back cover.

Windshield recycled plastic: Dell is using polyvinyl butyral (PVB) recycled from car windscreens to create a protective waterproof coating on laptop bags and backpacks. It is expected to avoid about 74000 pounds of such waste plastic entering the landfill every month.

Dell actively uses recycled materials such as electronic waste plastics, post consumer packaging, marine waste plastics, carbon fiber recycled materials and windshield recycled plastics.

Apple, Samsung and Microsoft have also set targets for the use of recycled materials

Apple also announced its commitment to using recycled materials in all of its devices. "Our mission is to achieve renewable materials for all products and packaging, and ultimately eliminate our dependence on crude oil," Apple wrote in its 2019 environmental responsibility report

More than 40 parts of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS max, and iPhone XR use recycled plastic.

Samsung also announced earlier this year that it plans to use 500000 tons of recycled plastic and collect 7.5 million tons of waste products by 2030 (accumulated in 2009).

Samsung will also change the design of mobile phone charger, replace the smooth exterior with matte surface, eliminate plastic protective film and reduce the use of plastic.

In addition, plastic bags for surface protection of household appliances such as televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, and other kitchen appliances will be replaced with plastic bags containing recyclable materials and bioplastics, which are respectively made of plastic waste and non fossil fuel materials such as starch and sugarcane.

In addition, Microsoft plans to increase its renewable energy consumption to 70% by 2023.
